Thoughts On The Emergent
I am sick and tired of the "emergent" movement. They say they are all about conversing about God and life, but they only acknowledge their own conversations. There are steps to having an "emergent" conversation and donations to be made to an "emergent" organization.
"Emergent" as an organization WILL fail. We don't need anyone to tell us we are discontent with the state of the church or that we crave more. We know we want to live life loving God and others.
The "Emergent" is everything we should run from. Organization is something we think we need. I disagree. I think we need less structure and more freedom. We don't need someone telling us to speak freely. Just do it. Converse about life, God ... anything ... Pour into each other. Don't pay anyone to tell you to do that. There is no proven structure for YOUR conversation. Live life. The "Emergent" is only creating a new set of rules and/or limitations.
I DO believe they have the greatest intentions. But I believe the are failing or misrepresenting us greatly.
Emerge we will. Without a title. Without a common voice, except love.
Emerging from what? Demerging...here I come.
Less of me, more of Christ.

I'm going to go out on a limb...
I've been thinking about all the families who have left the church I attended. They were all supremely dissatisfied with the status quo. Most were disillusioned with the self-perservative priority of the leadership. Each one sought a deeper, discipled relationship with Christ.
So they left.
And, except for me, every freakin' one of them just plopped themselves into other churches. In reality, they didn't really want something all that different. They just wanted to go to a place where they do all the same stupid shit that we do, only do it better, more organized and slicker. It will, at least, feel like a new thing, for awhile.
I think there's a very good reason the Bible refers to people as sheep. By and large, we're as dumb as a box of rocks, and we're easily led down almost any path. We crave comfort and security, and will gladly give up our minds and our cash to achieve such.
Here's the limb: I don't think that "Emergent—the organization" will fail. Sadly, I think that the organization will subvert "emergent—the conversation" into its own set of talking points, and eventually its agenda.
I think you're emerging (small 'e') quite nicely, Joshua. The question isn't "from what?" I think the better question is "emerging into what?" Lots of hope there, my brother.
Keep on wrestling and seeking Him and only Him.....you are emerging into exactly His plan for you....pisses you off doesn't it...I know it does me but a seeking heart HE never denies so I'm gonna keep it up and I pray you do too!!
Emerging from what? Demerging...here I come.
YEAH!!!!!!!
Now that I've got someone on board, I think I'm gonna start the "Demergent Church", so we can mobilize and grow!!!! Jeez...
On my blog I addressed the direction I believe Emergent will go.
I believe we're all emerging. Our conversations are proof of that. For some of us, I actually DO believe we're demerging... getting back to Christ's original intent (love), instead of evolving away from it.
Wouldn't a Demergent church, by definition, be shrinking?
"...like a frightened turtle, Jerry"
Actually, to 'demerge' is 'to plunge down into; to sink; to immerse.'
Another definition I found is 'Said of companies, etc: to undergo a reversal of a merger; to become separate again.'
A 'demergent' church would consist of those who separate themselves from the larger organization to become immersed in God.
Dang! Demerging kicks ass!!!!
Jeff ... you love plugging your blog...huh?
Great name ... now what?
Hey! You brought it up. I was just making a clarification on Dorsey's thoughts...
But now that I've successfully pimped my site,
I'M GOING TO DISNEY WORLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
