Jeez guys...
She quoted a lot of scriptures. We've got a lot of drinking to do.
Wow. This was not only my first time to your site, it was also the first time I've listened to any of your podcasts. I have to say up front that I will listen again. I attend a large "megachurch" in the midwest and I have to say that it is refreshing to hear some christians being real. I thought a select few of my friends and I were the only ones. God bless. Be Real. Be honest. Make a difference and have fun!
Hilarous!!!! stupid people are funny although it is not a joking matter!!???????!!
If Kirk Cameron wore a dress would he be
a nicer Shirley Phelps?
Kirk Cameron should be your next interview
Words cannot describe how inflammatory this woman is. I stopped listening about 20 minutes or so into the "interview" so I did not here what her take on Christ's GOSPEL is.
I'll say this much you guys really let her vitriolic diatribe dominate the landscape of this podcast. And, why did you have get into the divorce/remarriage issue with her? Of course she would blast out proof texts with a vengence without considering any sort of understanding relative to Christ's Character of mercy and what God's law really, wholistically teaches about this incredibly sensitive and volatile subject (of course all of this could be said about virtually everything that Phelps-Roper spews).
All-in-all, thanks for being part of "outing" this incredibly hateful excuse for a representative of Jesus Christ.
Oh my gawd - my she burn in "hell" forever!
Last night I listened to this podcast. Afterward I had a drink and went to bed to let it sink in. Here's what I think.
I think Shirley Phelps Roper is . . . right. Now hold on, let me explain. She is clearly a horrible person to encounter and I can't imagine that her message will "save" any of the individuals that she supposedly cares about. Having said that, I think there is something to be learned from her.
To Christian moderates she must seem to be a wacko but I applaud her for taking her literalism to its logical extreme. Like Sam Harris (The End of Faith) I think that moderation in religion is a myth. To be a Christian who is tolerant of the gay sin (and other sins for that matter) a person must loosely interpret or ignore many statements in the Old and New Testament. The reason Christian moderates are able to do this is that they find the clear statements in the Bible to be indigestible in the light of the last couple of thousand years of human thought. Specifically regarding gay people, it seems clear that they are destined for hell—along with all sinners—if they don’t change their ways. Yet, we know that gay people exist, for some mysterious reason, not of their own choosing and, from their point of view, not necessarily because of their horrible upbringing. To reconcile this we have to be moderate in our application of belief. To be a true Christian who believes the Bible to be inerrant and God’s actual communication to man the only logical application of this belief with regard to gay people must be to tell them they are going to hell if they don’t repent and turn from their wicked ways. For the same reason it seems to me an Islamic suicide bomber is very consistent in the application of their faith which tells them that all non-believers must be eliminated.
I am a gay man who also believes in God, was ordained by a major protestant denomination, and subsequently left the church, not because of my gay-ness but because of the stupidity of church people, specifically the professional clergy. I was also very much affected by the words of Tillapaugh. Now that I am on the outside looking in a lot has changed. I still interpret the Old and New Testament in the same fashion as I always have. I cannot, however, in good conscience, reinterpret biblical passages to excuse myself for being gay. On the other hand I am gay and I do love God and, therefore, I have to find a way to deal with this inconsistency in myself. My choice is to live with the inconsistency. I know that Shirley would condemn me to hell. I also know that there is somewhat of a relationship between myself and God and I have to believe that He understands me such as I am. I suppose that makes me a Christian moderate. This is something I still need to work through. It seems to me that there are only two logical options open to me. 1) abandon all desire for relationship with another man and live as a celibate for the rest of my life (the option my Christian friends would love for me to choose) or, 2) abandon my faith altogether. There is a third option but only if I were a Catholic. I could be as gay as I want . . . as long as I never have sex. That kind of describes me anyway. Humm. Perhaps I should become a Catholic?
So to the Christians who open their arms to gay people without condemnation I say thanks but . . . you really need to read your Bible. You may love the sinner and hate the sin but if you really believe the words of your faith, you must fully condemn the sin and make it clear to those gay people that you love that they are going to hell unless they make an about face.
Shirley’s approach is inhuman but consistent. Your approach may be human but could be inconsistent. So, let me make a couple of suggestions. Giving your gay friends books that tell them they can change and become straight is really stupid. Don’t you think that ever occurred to them? And if they believe in God, don’t you think they have prayed about this a million times already? Treating them like shit is equally stupid. You do not have the option of being ok with gay people and treating them as brothers and sisters in the faith because the Bible doesn’t give you that option. The Catholic approach is the only consistent one I can see. So, since you can’t change them or make choices for them, how about just honoring them as friends and humans, making your belief clearly known without soap-boxing every chance you have, and letting them find their own way? If you love them and they love you, if they move in a direction that they feel you can help them with, they will come to you.
"...I am gay and I do love God and, therefore, I have to find a way to deal with this inconsistency in myself. My choice is to live with the inconsistency...I have to believe that He understands me such as I am."
Then why do you insist that I condemn you? Why must I demand that you change? I live with my own inconsistencies. Why can't I live with yours?
You do not have the option of being ok with gay people and treating them as brothers and sisters in the faith because the Bible doesn’t give you that option.
I don't think it's as cut-and-dried as that, irreverent reverend. The bible does NOT condemn homosexuality as clearly as so many "inerrentists" think it does. There are many resources out there, of which this is but one which delves a little more deeply into the "clobber verses" on homosexuality.
This next response isn't really aimed at you, irreverent reverend, but I'm tired of "moderate" or "progressive" Christians such as myself being dismissed as not "really" believing in the Bible, simply because we don't take every word in the bible literally. Just because I consider the historical context, textual criticism, translation problems, etc., doesn't mean I have a weak faith; only that I have a strong brain.
Nija . . . thanks for the thoughts. It would be quite fun to actually meet you and converse. Seems like there are so many interesting and intelligent people who visit this site.
As much as I really enjoy the way you think, Nija (your site is great) I have to say I disagree. I do think the Bible does condemn homosexuality clearly. I've read a lot of theology on this subject, worked in four different denominations, including the Metropolitan Community (biggest organized gay church in the country) and I don't see how anyone who even casually reads just the New Testament can believe that homosexuality is not clearly condemned there. I know this is not the place to get into that conversation and I hate being in agreement with those fundamentalists who hate gays but, even considering historical context, textual criticism, language and translations problems...I don't see how this point of view is possible.
Dorsey, I never said that you have to condemn me (gay people) but that those of the fundamental Christian persuasion have to condemn "the sin". So as much as I detest Roper and her kind I do defend her theology.
Well, the Bible also clearly states that the earth is flat and slavery is okay, so...there ya go.
Yeah... we find a way to deal with inconsistencies in so much of life.... I like that.
In the Bible I read, "Sin" became the non-issue after Jesus died on the cross. Once a person accepts Jesus then we become righteouse before him. Nothing is ever said of required perfection.
To say the someone who has the outward "sin" of being gay is so strange, because the one pointing their finger has the "sin" of being judgemental and often times in the spirit of their "rightness" it is done in a rude or demeaning way. There is no level of one sin worse than another in Gods eyes. We all have hangups, some can hide them better. Does that make someone a better Christian - I think not.
That is my peace on the subject. Thanks for the forum.
I thought you guys were surprisingly polite (for the most part). I thought she would hang up in the first couple in minutes.
I think the most interesting thing about the homosexuality debate is that it is singled out as “the sin”.
Most people come up with this, “it’s a sin again the body” kind of stuff but so is gluttony.
When was the last time you heard about someone being brought up on church discipline because they gained a few pounds? In fact, I see overweight pastors all the time.
Oh this one is for ninjanun - most of the people in biblical times thought of the world as bowl shaped and not flat. Actually they saw the crust as the bottom of the bowl with mountains around the sides with 4 angeles at each "corner" (though not meant to point to a square) who created the wind by blowing. Then there was a dome over the top with holes in it to let in rain.
Still - I get your point.
WOW!!!! She's a freakin' genious. I would never take her to my church. Jesus and I carpool together and there is only room for the two of us in his truck. Jesus loves you, Shirley! I think you're an asshole.
Shirley, I believe you have been tricked. It is not Gods word you teach and believe. I believe you need to put that book down and find God. Your ranting and raving almost made me vommit. You should reconsider pushing such beliefs on others. They are not Gods beliefs and curious people shouldnt be incouraged by you Shirley.
So what are you guys take on the gayness question? Is it OK or are they bound for the pits of hell?
Oh my God. I just listened to this. Wow. What a raving looney toon. You guys handled her great. It scares me to think that non Christians could think of her as what a Christian is. Whoa
