We offer commentary on the very last sermon Steve ever gave ... He loves to hear himself talk, so hang tight and enjoy this Steve filled podcast ... GRACE.
We should start something called... "Inside the Pastor's Studio". Thanks Shelly.
And D... no you've never heard THAT sermon before. You might have heard cheesy posers pretending to do THAT sermon. I am a completely original and unique communicator, and my ideas are all of my own... really... they are... I promise!
Now when we've heard preacher-Steve, it would be interesting to hear how much you've changed. Ok, it's quite obvious that you've changed a lot, but how would you communicate "Grace" to your loyal podcast listeners? Or, perhaps you wouldn't?
I believe the recieving and giving of grace is very important in a person's life.... no doubt. It's a principle that takes time in some instances, depending on the circumstances... but it is quite possible to give grace to others that you never thought possible.
I just finished listening to Steve's sermon and I gotta tell ya, if I had been in the church that day listening to that I would have walked out. A few years ago I probably would have eagerly listened to that sermon and even taken notes! The message running throughout was good, God's grace. But I never heard Steve once say why we need God's grace. I heard how much God loves us and how there's nothing we can do to earn God's grace, but why did God extend grace to us anyway? Did we do something to offend God? YES! But there was no mention of sin, there was no mention of Jesus as the way God showed His grace to us, no mention of Jesus' crucified for my sins. I heard alot about Jesus as my life coach, but is that the Jesus of the Bible?
The funny thing is when I came here to SCP, I was listening to sermons very much like the one Steve gave, but as I started reading this site more and more, and listening to the podcasts, I came to learn that sermons like these, were ridiculous and part of a marketing campaign to grow the church, and that's what eventually led me to start looking for another church. Who knew I'd end up in a Lutheran church? Certainly not me. But I think what happened to me is a rare thing, because most of the people that come to SCP just come here to complain about sermons like the one Steve gave and how bad their church is, if they're still going or how bad their church was before they left.
SCP can work to actually move you closer to God and the true Jesus, the one you never hear about in church but the one you definitely read about in the Bible. The Jesus you need, the Jesus who was sent as a manifestation of God's grace to us. I may be strange because I want to go to church and be reminded of my sin, of my status as a sinner who deserves nothing but Hell and torment because I have sinned against God. People today would walk out of churches in droves, if they heard stuff like that preached, but the truth hurts. We have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, you hear that all the time in the "sinner's prayer", but how many people who pray that prayer could actually tell you what a sin really is or how they ahve committed them against God? Not to many, because the message today is "God loves you because you're such a good person and He has extended His grace to you through His son Jesus Christ. Won't you please come down to the altar and accept Christ as your Savior?" Sounds great right, but it doesn't address the issue of why I need Jesus in the first place if I'm such a good person. And that's what needs to be addressed. Otherwise we're just filling our pews with false converts who want to "live their best life now" or who want to have a "purpose driven life". We sell fad Christianity in our churches and that doesn't help anybody.
It's for this kind of shit that i don't go to church. sorry zec, but i know that mindset, i held it for many years. christ died for my sins, so that i can be one of the few who go to heaven, while most are tortured in hell. i used to buy into the supremacy of christianity bullshit, and now find that message intolerable. in fact, the kind of god that demands such of his creation, and relishes in human sacrifice, cannot be tolerated on any grounds.

I love me some Mystery Sermon Theatre. ;) The commentary was hilarious. :D
It's funny; I've never heard Steve preach, but I swear I've heard that exact sermon a half-dozen times before.
...no offense.

Love that intro!

Just an idea.
I remember listening to this when you first posted it. I remember enjoying it...
Aside from all the sermonizing, how much of the content of this sermon do you still agree with, Steve?

If you begin an "Inside the Pastor's Studio" then I must ask:
Steve, what is your favorite curse word?
I'm pretty sure I know Josh's answer. ;)
My thoughts exactly, Mark. Only I would've started out with: "What turns you on?" ;)
Mark: Fuck and it's many derivatives.
Shelly: Long walks on the beach... what else?

So, how's the podcast-a-month thing working out?
