My wife & I just sat here and watched all this and it's sickening.
Still, ever since I first heard of the Phelps family, it has been apparent to me that their views are not that far off from mainline evangelicalism. Their methods are more extreme, but their content isn't.
Think about it. How many ministers blamed the New Orleans Mardi-Gras lifestyle for Katrina? How many mainstream ministers blamed homosexuality as God's judgement for AIDS? How many called 9/11 judgement of liberal America? How many said school shootings like Columbine & VA Tech were just God's judgement for taking prayer out of schools?
People can be offended all they want by the Phelps family. But we hear the same thing from many mainline pulpits, right here in our hometowns. Maybe not dripping with such vitriolic glee... but the message isn't that different.
